Helping families, attracting new customers and launching an online shop are some of the goals and New Year’s resolutions Tucson businesses have set for themselves for 2014.
Here’s what several have to say:
Antigone Books, 411 N. Fourth Ave.: “We want to create more bicycle parking,” said Kate Randall, co-owner of the store. “They have a bike corral across the street, and I’m hoping to get one. That’s a request we get a lot.”
Brewd — A Coffee Lounge, 4960 N. Sabino Canyon Road: “I would say to strive to become a part of our neighborhood,” said shop owner Phil Bryson. “To better serve our customers and to be a fun and safe spot for folks to hang out in.”
Casa de los Niños Thrift Store, 1302 E. Prince Road: “I would like to be able to help more families in our community in 2014,” said store manager Nicholas McLain. “I would also like to have the thrift store have more visibility in the community. ... I want to do more outreach in the community, partner with new donors for the store and continue to build and strengthen relationships.”

Deco, 2612 E. Broadway: “We want to finish our remodel,” said Monica Hay Cook, who co-owns the gift store with her sister, Marlies Hay William. The shop owners started remodeling in the fall, which included taking out rooms and putting in a new floor. “We need to finish the lighting and create storage. ... We opened it up so there’s a lot more light.”
Greentoes, 529 N. Sixth Ave.: “We resolve to stay educated on the best practices and products offered to date,” said Victor Thompson, owner of the “green” manicure and pedicure studio. “We also visualize participating in more community events this year as well as reaching out to community members who haven’t met us but need us, such as people who suffer from illness and wish to relax in a place that is calm and doesn’t offend their senses.”
Posner’s Art Store, 944 E. University Blvd.: Posner’s has a steady stream of loyal customers, but reaching new ones is a goal for the art store for the new year. “We’d like to increase our inventory so we can increase our customer base,” said co-owner Emily Brown.
Razorz Edge, 427 N. Fourth Ave.: Getting more involved with the community and giving back is a 2014 resolution for the alternative clothing and accessory store. Also, “stop sweating the small stuff and see the big picture,” said Lauren Baker, co-owner of the store.
The Running Shop, 3055 N. Campbell Ave.: “I feel it’s more important to live every day and do the best I can every day and not wait until New Year’s to make changes,” said store owner Sharon Bart. That being said, Bart wants her store to improve on what it does on a daily basis this year, which is “to give the best customer service and make sure people get fit for the right shoe so they can reach their goals.”
Tucson Tamale Co., 2545 E. Broadway: “We’re opening a new location in January,” said Todd Martin, co-owner of the shop. “And we’re adding a couple of new items (empanadas and organic tortillas), so we want to make sure the quality is as good as our tamales.” Tucson Tamale’s second location will be at 7159 E. Tanque Verde Road.
Yikes Toys, 2930 E. Broadway: “My resolution is to get my website shop live in January,” said Patricia Katchur, the store’s owner. “I will be selling online, in addition to in-store. We also turn 25 in February, so I want to do a lot of fun things to celebrate. Those are the two main drives going for the new year.”
