What is the higher power?
The second step of the 12-step program tells us that a power greater than ourselves can restore our human abilities and return us to sobriety and recovery. The first level of higher power is the sponsor, who is personally making substantial progress in his own sobriety and recovery. A sponsor will share the power of his experience, strength, and hope with the sponsee.
The second level of higher power is the 12-step group that meets regularly with each other to share their combined experience and wisdom with each other.
The third level of higher power is the understanding and wisdom of a successful member representative with a long history of sobriety and recovery as well as understanding of the intricacies of the 12-step program.
The fourth level of higher power is the ultimate or the first source of everything, every thought, all wisdom, etc. This highest, or first source, is commonly called God or any of several equivalent titles.
