Singer/songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway makes her big-screen debut as a lounge singer in Robert De Niro's "The Good Shepherd."
Initially, De Niro tapped Callaway, who has performed professionally for nearly 30 years, to sing on the soundtrack. When she arrived at the recording studio, De Niro was there and directed every take.
"What was so exciting was he would come up to me. He'd whisper things to me in the isolation booth. He'd give me a little kiss. I was like, 'Oh, my God. I'm in heaven,' " Callaway said in a phone interview last month.
The day after the recording session, she got a call. De Niro wanted her to sing in the movie.
On the set at the Brooklyn Armory, she met the movie's stars, Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie.
"Angelina, who I just adore . . . reached out her hand and said, 'Hi, I'm Angie.' It was the first time I didn't say the first thing I thought, which was, 'Hi, please adopt me.' "
