Congress dishing up laughs with Delaney
Rob Delaney is a Twittering fool.
He tweets on average 20 times a day, and it's funny stuff. Check out his tweets from Sunday:
"Good way to prepare for having a toddler is to pour a little milk on every single item in your home & smear megaboogers on all your shirts."
"I bet 2 guys named Eric would have an easier time starting a sleepover camp for infants than 2 guys named Sid."
And this shout-out to Arizona: "ARIZONA! Come see me next weekend. Shows in #Tucson & #Phoenix. RT & don't bathe"
In May, Delaney -Â who will remind you of a young Will Ferrell - was named the Funniest Person On Twitter at the Comedy Awards on Comedy Central.
On the scale of Oscar and Grammy awards, that probably doesn't merit a blip, but to a guy who is a tweet away from needing a 12-step program, the nod was vindication.
Delaney, who has more than 400,000 people following him, has turned his Twitter-ati into stardom with a TV deal on Comedy Central and shows booked throughout the country, including a stop Friday at Club Congress, 311 E .Congress. St. Pauly Casillas and Jericho Davidson are also on the bill. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $12 and $14 at hotelcongress.com/club
Mariachi Extravaganza sets high expectations
Gaslight Theatre, the home of cornball live theater, is hosting a Mariachi concert on Monday under the banner "Mariachi Extravaganza."
Which begs the question: What about this concert makes it an extravaganza?
How's this for an answer:
• Four mariachi groups - Mariachi Sonido de Mexico, Mariachi Tapatio de Tucson, Mariachi Tesoro de Tucson, and Mariachi Cielo de Mexico - playing traditional tunes.
• Spectacular costumes for colorful glitz.
• The quintessential sounds of Tucson blaring from trumpets, guitars, vihuelas and fat-bellied guitarróns.
• Ballet Folklorico Tapatio bringing the music to life with traditional folklorico dancing.
About those musicians: the quartet of mariachi groups, all hailing from Tucson, cover the experience-level gamut, from youngsters to veteran players. The most tenured is Mariachi Cielo de Mexico, which has been around since 2000 and is regarded as one of Tucson's finest and most thrilling ensembles. Among the big names it has backed: Linda Rondstadt, Jose Feliciano and Joan Sebastian.
The next generation of mariachi gets its shot in Mariachi Tesoro de Tucson, the training ground for future mariachi stars. The group of talented kids is led by Jaime Valenzuela, who starts them out from kindergarten on.
Admission to Monday's concert is $18 for adults, $14 kids by calling 886-9428. The performance starts at 7 p.m. at the Gaslight, 7010 E. Broadway.
