There’s a heck of a lot going on this weekend and much of it centered around downtown with the annual HoCo Fest that continues through Sunday, Sept. 3.
If you have commitment issues and don’t want to be tied down to five days, here are two alternatives:
- El Saguarito Mexican Food, 1763 E. Prince Road, is celebrating the long holiday weekend with live music throughout from a roster of Tucson artists starting on Thursday, Aug. 31, with John Hawk. He hits the stage at 7 p.m. On Friday, Sept. 1, Peter Dalton Ronstadt will play on the restaurant’s stage at 7 and Trio Mexico, a strolling mariachi trio, will play inside and on the patio on Saturday, Sept. 2.
It’s part of the midtown restaurant’s live music program that also include John & Jeanne Ronstadt on Sept. 8. Admission is free. El Saguarito has hosted live music for a few years, said owner Albert Vasquez, who said that members of the storied musical Ronstadt family are regulars. - Tucson’s a notorious last-minute ticket town, but there are some concerts that you just can’t take the procrastination route.
Like Saturday’s Mexican pop co-bill Gloria Trevi and Alejandra Guzman.
If you didn’t jump when the AVA concert was announced back in the spring, you may find yourself either squished onto the lawn with more than 2,000 fans or listening to the music from the parking lot of the AVA at Casino del Sol Resort, 5655 W. Valencia Road, on Saturday, Sept. 2. As of Monday, there were less than 300 lawn tickets left and two in the front row of the high-ticket reserved seating.
It’s easy to see the draw; Trevi and Guzman are big legends in the Spanish singer-songwriter genre whose music, style, philosophies and lifestyles have been modeled after and admired by their peers and those who’ve come after them. The pair also has a legendary rivalry, mostly conjured up and nurtured by the celebrity-hungry media. The chance to see these two on the same stage on the same night? Yep, worth the $155 highest-priced ticket.
And when the promoters bill this as “Gloria Trevi vs. Alejandra Guzmán” you start imagining a once-in-a-lifetime musical throwdown. But we’re sure it will end on the friendliest of terms — like the happy big-dollar-sign ending of the Mayweather-McGregor fight last weekend.
The Trevi-Guzman show starts at 8 p.m. Saturday and lawn tickets, if available, are $50 at tickets.casinodelsol.com
