The Tucson International Mariachi Conference will honor Spanish singer/actress Rocío Dúrcal by inducting her posthumously into the conference's Hall of Fame April 28.
The charismatic and widely beloved Dúrcal died March 25 in Spain at age 61 after losing her longtime battle with cancer.
Conference board President Frank Valenzuela said the musician was an obvious choice for her contributions to the genre.
"I had actually had her on my conference wish list for next year since it is going to be our 25th anniversary," Valenzuela said. "We picked her because she was very much into mariachi music. I heard it quoted in a couple of places the term 'La Española más Mexicana' (The Most Mexican Spaniard) and that was true. A lot of people thought she was Mexicana because of all that she did for the music, but she was Española.

"Her contributions to Mexican music, particularly mariachi music, the duets she had with Juan Gabriel and her attachment to Mexico and the United States are all reasons why we chose to induct her."
