A Bavarian-inspired mountain trip can be found in Washington's town of Leavenworth. Nestled at the base of the Cascade Mountains, Leavenworth captures the Old World charm of a European alpine village with its wooden Bavarian architecture, German food like brats and schnitzel and even its own Oktoberfest.

Established in 1911 by Danish Americans, Solvang has been dubbed the "The Danish Capital of America" for its authentic Danish-style architecture — including those iconic wooden windmills — and heritage, like bakeries serving traditional Danish pastries.
Travelers can leisurely meander the village's four blocks, stopping at wineries and the country's only museum dedicated to Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote famous fairytales like "The Little Mermaid."

"For those needing a break from wandering, horse-drawn carriages are available, adding a romantic energy to this summer island getaway spot."

Charleston's Southern charm evokes a European vibe, with its cobblestone streets and beautifully detailed architecture with French and English colonial roots. Travelers can ride horse-drawn carriages and explore the history of South Carolina's oldest city. "Boating here is a must," Streif said. "Explore the outlying barrier islands, embark on a fishing charter, or see dolphins splashing around you at sunset on a Charleston boat charter."
