Andres Cano, a City High School senior and an intern in Pima County Supervisor Richard Elias’ office, is among five local students to be named Gates Millennium Scholars.
The scholarships, established with a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, cover unmet undergraduate college expenses for top minority students, renewable every year based on satisfactory academic progress. Support is available in fields identified as lacking in diversity, including computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health and science.
Elias lauded the scholarship program in a press release. “Too often, top-notch students like Andres are at a disadvantage because of the rising costs of higher education,” he said.
Cano, who chairs the Arizona Governor’s Youth Commission and is an energetic community volunteer, hopes to attend Tufts University in Boston, where he plans to major in political science.
