Looks like developer Paul McKee has inked his first retail tenant for his long-delayed NorthSide Regeneration project. And the store will be (drum roll, please)... a Dollar General.
According to city records, on Jan. 7 NorthSide Regeneration received a permit to construct a commercial building at 1500 N. Grand Blvd. - a currently vacant lot NorthSide owns at the corner of Grand and Cass Ave - at a cost of $1.4 million.
And as local blog Nextstl first ferreted out, it appears the commercial building to be constructed will be a Dollar General store. This week's edition of the City Journal gives notice that a hearing will be held next month on a conditional use permit for a Dollar General store at that address. E-mails by Building Blocks to Dollar General requesting confirmation that they're planning a north St. Louis store were not returned.

But McKee did respond, and suggested any specific projects on NorthSide are still up in the air, waiting for the Missouri Supreme Court's ruling on the project's $390 million tax increment financing package.
"None of the projects begin until we resolve the TIF issue," he wrote in an e-mail.
That ruling could come as early as Tuesday, the next date the Missouri Supreme Court is scheduled to hand down its rulings. Or it could be next month, or the month after. There's no way to know for sure.
So in other words, it sounds like a modest Dollar General is in the works at Grand and Cass. But don't hold your breath.
