Tucson firefighters rescued two men from their pickup truck Sunday night after it was swept into rising flood waters and carried 300 yards down a Midtown wash.
The incident was perhaps the most serious of many involving vehicles caught in floodwaters on area roads, said Capt. Norm Carlton, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.
Nick Emelity 23, and Brandon Goldsmith, 26, were crossing the Arroyo Chico Wash at South Highland Avenue about 8 p.m. when Emelity's truck stalled in what they thought was shallow water at the bottom of the wash. At least 25 firefighters responded to the call, Carlton said.
"I imagine it was a pretty hair-raising ride going down there," Carlton said.
The storms that Goldsmith and Emelity got caught in "blew up pretty quickly" Sunday evening, said National Weather Service forecaster Steven Reedy.

As of 9:30 p.m., the rainfall at Tucson International Airport was 0.52 inches, Reedy said. But Tucson-area spotters reported totals ranging from about a half-inch to over two inches at one site near the Tucson Mountains.
