About a dozen women turned out last Thursday to volunteer for "Step Out Step Up: It's a Wrap" at La Encantada shopping center, 2905 E. Skyline Drive.
La Encantada's parent company, Macerich, spearheaded the effort, which involved having volunteers at 71 shopping centers across the country wrap gifts that day for women in shelters.
The idea was to bring holiday cheer to women who might not be opening many gifts this holiday season.
At La Encantada, the women worked to wrap 400 boxes of candles to deliver to Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse after hearing about the event from the newspaper and e-mail blasts from the shopping center.
The volunteers set up a makeshift assembly line for wrapping, tying ribbons and taping down the wrapping paper, and they joked about knowing how Santa's elves must feel.

Macerich hosted the nationwide event in partnership with the Step Up Women's Network, which is dedicated to strengthening community resources for women and girls.
