For the next few weeks, those in need can look to the Salvation Army Tucson Amphi Corps as a resource for brand-new essentials free of charge.
The Amphi Community Center, at 218 E. Prince Road, is serving as a distribution site for more than $800,000 worth of items, including diapers, wipes and other baby items; clothing and shoes for children and youth; women’s hygiene products; socks and undershirts for adults; and much more.
“These are all brand-new items. Lots of times clients get donations of items that are used and they are definitely needed and appreciated, but when they receive new items, it can be a bit more encouraging. It is something that really gives them hope,” said Salvation Army Tucson Amphi Corps Captain Kristy Church.
She credits the Pima County Community & Workforce Development Department for helping to acquire the wholesale goods originally intended for asylum seekers through a federal surplus program coordinated out of Yuma. The Amphi Corps is funneling distribution through local nonprofits and programs, including various veterans services, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and the International Rescue Committee Tucson.

“These are miscellaneous items were designated for emergency services and we are distributing them to different organizations that work with the public. We wanted to make sure these items stayed in Tucson and are distributed evenly throughout the city,” said Church.
