You can get your pets a holiday gift of sorts at no charge — microchipping so they’re more likely to make it back home to you if they happen to become lost.
Pima Animal Care Center is offering the microchips daily between Nov. 27 and Jan. 5 for dogs and cats that live in the county.
Data shows chipped pets are roughly three times more likely to be returned home if they’re lost, “but just 15% of the nearly 10,000 stray pets PACC has taken in so far this year have been chipped or wearing a tag,” the center said in a news release.
“With the holidays upon us, bringing the chaos of visitors and open doors, and New Year’s fireworks just around the corner, it’s a critical time of year to protect your pet,” PACC Director Monica Dangler said in the written statement.
Chipping of pets also keeps animals in the shelter safer by preventing overcrowding, she added.
