A prison bus carrying 24 maximum security inmates was in a collision Wednesday morning that shut down Interstate 10 for 45 minutes.
The accident occurred at about 5:15 a.m. when the Corrections Corporation of America bus rear-ended a work truck travelling eastbound on the interstate just west of Avra Valley Road. The bus was transporting the inmates from a privately run prison in Eloy to a prison in Mississippi, according to reports from the Department of Public Safety and Northwest Fire District.
Damage to the vehicles was minor. Two corrections officers were taken to University Medical Center with minor injuries. Three other corrections officers on the bus were unharmed, said Capt. Adam Goldberg with Northwest Fire. Several inmates reported minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
During the interstate closure, traffic was diverted off Interstate 10 at Avra Valley, then back onto the interstate. Still, Goldberg said, freeway traffic backed up for 2-1/2 miles.
