A University of Arizona police officer died Tuesday while scuba diving during a family vacation in San Diego, police said.
Officer Daniel Forchione was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon after the accident, according to a UAPD press release.
Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum told The Associated Press that Forchione slipped under the ocean's surface at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
He had apparently taken off his air tank following a dive from a charter boat about a mile off the San Diego shore.
Forchione's body was found about 65 feet underwater about an hour later.
Rescuers were not able to revive him.
Forchione served with the Police Department as a motor officer in the traffic unit.
He had been with the department since 1994.
