Work is under way on Sahuarita's first medical facility at the new Marketplace at Rancho Sahuarita.
The 4,800-square-foot Carondelet Medical Group Office, scheduled to open in May, will offer primary- and urgent-care services, along with referral to specialists, said Letty Ramirez, a Carondelet spokeswoman.
Later this year, Carondelet will bring its own specialists to the office in the plaza on the northwest corner of West Sahuarita Road and Rancho Sahuarita Boulevard, she said.
Walter Davis, Carondelet Medical Group CEO, said the office is the first step toward establishing a "presence" in Sahuarita.
It will be followed by construction of a regional hospital, to be built to the east next to the new municipal center south of Sahuarita Road and across from the school district campus.

"This is the first step toward that hospital," Davis said.
Ramirez said Carondelet officials hope to open the 78-bed hospital in 2012.
Davis said the medical group office and hospital will give Sahuarita residents access to medical care in their own community.
The lack of such facilities now requires Sahuarita residents to go to Tucson or Green Valley, where Carondelet Health Network has facilities that provide X-rays and other imagery and services.
"The goal is to provide those services closer to home," Davis said.
