Whereas, everyone needs something to feel good about now and again; and
Whereas, it only costs the county a few thousand dollars a year, which is a drop in its $1.4 billion bucket of a budget; and
Whereas, that money gets somebody a very nice framed proclamation; and
Whereas, if you think it's hard to remember to buy flowers for Secretary's Day, try remembering Patriotism Week, National Day of Prayer, Wildfire Awareness Week, Thunderstorm Safety Awareness Week, National Insurance Week, Correctional Officers Week, Minority Enterprise Development Week and Recovery Walk Day year after year after year; and
Whereas, we think old ladies have a lot of pluck for not taking old age lying down so we proclaimed April 25, 2005, to be National Red Hat Day in Pima County, AZ; and
Whereas, Hurricane Katrina didn't hit here, but we could only get reimbursed for helping out if we declared it an emergency, on Sept. 13, 2005, we proclaimed an emergency in response to the "catastrophic impact" of Hurricane Katrina; and

Whereas, dinner is good and drugs are bad and more of the former means less of the latter, we proclaimed Sept. 20, 2005, to be Family Day — A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children; and
Whereas, because somebody asked them to, they declared Sept. 10-16, 2006, to be National Assisted Living Week in honor of the "special bond between our beloved seniors and the staff who care for them"; and
Whereas, because buying stuff is a popular form of social activism, they proclaimed Oct. 3, 2007, "Change a Light, Change the World Day" to promote the use of fluorescent lights; and
Whereas, if the county can't prevent the Chicago White Sox from training in Glendale and dismantling the entire spring training enterprise, it might as well make them feel guilty about leaving by proclaiming a "heartwarming thank you" on March 4 to all our major league teams for training here; and
Whereas, county officials figure they better be nice to Sheriff Clarence Dupnik because he's been a Tucson lawman for 50 years and he just might be around for another 50, so they proclaimed today Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik Day; and
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Arizona Daily Star does hereby proclaim today, this last Wednesday in April, to be
PROCLAMATION DAY.
Oh, and have a Happy Clarence Dupnik Day.
Did you know
Pima County has issued 87 proclamations since Jan. 1, 2005. At least 72 of those were presented as framed certificates costing, on average, $88.70 per proclamation.
Among those proclamations, issued by the Board of Supervisors, were seven declaring an emergency, five recognizing the retirement of county employees or community leaders and three marking the deaths of community leaders.
Every year, the county issues a proclamation celebrating the founding of the city of Tucson.
