Green Fields senior puts on 'Breast Fest'
Green Fields Country Day School senior Philip Heilman is organizing a benefit concert for breast cancer awareness featuring six local bands.
"Breast Fest" is the culmination of Heilman's year-long independent study of his passion - music. All Green Fields seniors get a chance to spend a year researching a topic in which they're interested.
"Breast cancer has always been really personal to me because people in my family have had it," Heilman said.
He chose for event proceeds to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation because the group pays for mammograms for women who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford them, he said.
In his search for a lineup for next Thursday's concert, Heilman didn't have to look far for Manic After Hours, a band comprised of four of his closest friends from Catalina Foothills High School who tied for second place in this year's Arizona Daily Star Battle of the Bands; or the psychedelic-esque rockers The Bare Electric, which includes three Green Fields alumni.
Also on the lineup is the folk band Logan Greene & the Bricks, blues-reggae band The Hounds and rockers The Ghost of 505. The popular pop-rock band Mostly Bears is headlining.
Heilman said he needs at least 300 people to attend for him to break even on his expenses, and he'd like to see at least 500 attend, with hopes of raising at least $2,000 for charity.
All the bands are performing free of charge.
Tickets are $10 in advance - email Heilman at info@breastfesttucson.com - or $11 through the Rialto Theatre box office.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. March 31 at the Rialto, 318 E. Congress St.
