  • Jonathan Lines Special to the Arizona Daily Star

An opinion writer argues that voter confidence in Arizona elections depends on public understanding of how the system works. The piece highlights election security measures, support for mail voting and the importance of combating misinformation ahead of the 2026 election.

Local opinion: Year into cell phone ban, results inconsistent but promising

  • Heather Mace Special to the Arizona Daily Star

A year after Arizona required schools to adopt cell phone policies, educators and researchers are reporting encouraging results. An opinion writer points to improved attendance, higher test scores and more student interaction as evidence that limiting phone use may be helping classrooms rega…

Local opinion: New eastside PACC center aims to find more pets homes

  • Steve Kozachik Special to the Arizona Daily Star

Pima Animal Care Center is opening a new adoption-focused facility on Tucson’s east side, offering dozens of dogs and cats ready for new homes. Supporters say the center will make pet adoption more accessible while helping ease overcrowding at the county’s main animal shelter.

Local opinion: ‘Lord of the Flies’ offers lessons for modern America

  • Gerald Farrington Special to the Arizona Daily Star

An opinion writer draws parallels between "Lord of the Flies," the Founding Fathers and today’s political climate, arguing that democratic institutions, social norms and the rule of law are essential safeguards against humanity’s more destructive instincts.

    • Yehuda Ceitlin Special to the Arizona Daily Star

    Letter: $250.00 bill

    • Valerie Golembiewski, Southeast side

I support having Trump on the proposed $250.00 bill because by federal law, only deceased individuals whose place in history is well-known to the American people can be depicted on U.S. currency. The Secretary of the Treasury holds the final authority over banknote designs, with a longstandi…

Letter: Not swayed by glitz and tacky

    • Alan Barreuther, Foothills

We will avoid having anything to do with the national 250th anniversary of our nation, relying on the good memories of the last major celebration on the 200th anniversary. During simpler times, Tucsonans used to enjoy picnics, BBQs, swimming, and games in the park during the 4th of July fest…

    Letter: Not Dead Yet

    • MICHAEL BURDOO, West side

The Thayer Amendment prohibits the portrait of a living person on U.S. bank notes, bonds, or securities. Even though it dates from 1866 it is still in effect. Foreign banknotes may portray the reigning monarch, but U.S. currency can’t portray a living person be he a President or a dog catcher.

    Letter: $250 Bill

    • Gary Haslett, SaddleBrooke

A week ago I sent in a letter that was about Trump’s $1.76 billion slush fund. I made a joke about Trump suing the Treasury Department because he didn’t like the looks of his photo on the new $250 bill. I figured the premise was so absurd that it would be comical.

    • Loyal M Johnson Jr, Oro Valley

I continue to ask myself why Democrats are so miserable, so angry, dissatisfied, unhappy, and even though they live in the greatest country in the world. The true reason is that they are cognizant and ashamed of their constant and obvious failures. President Trump, through his actions, has d…
