StarNet, the Arizona Daily Star’s Web site, was named Best News Web Site in an international competition sponsored by Editor & Publisher and Mediaweek magazines.
The Star’s EPpy Award for Best News Web site in the category of sites with fewer than 1 million monthly unique visitors was announced Thursday during the annual Interactive Newspaper Conference and Trade Show in New Orleans.
This was the Star’s fifth consecutive year as an EPpy finalist and the first as a winner.
The award reflects a broad-based effort by the Star’s newsroom, especially the Tucson & Region staff and its database- driven project reporting, said Online Editor John Bolton.
He singled out the investigative work of city government reporter Rob O’Dell and the depth of the breaking-news coverage of University of Arizona coaching changes for the strength of the nomination of work done in 2008.

The Star’s nomination also credited readers' online participation in photo gallery all-stars; their suggestions for Gifts of Tucson, people who make a difference through kind acts; and the Three Wishes database, in which the Star asked non-profits for their holiday wish list.
The other finalists in StarNet’s Best News Web Site category were LJWorld.com and NationalJournal.com
CNN.com was named Best News Web Site with more than 1 million unique monthly visitors.
The Star’s AzNightBuzz was a finalist for Best Entertainment Site in its size category. Las Vegas Weekly was the winner.
Boston.com Things To Do and Boston.com Arts & Entertainment tied for best Entertainment site with more than 1 million unique monthly visitors.
The 2009 EPpy Awards mark the 14th consecutive year of the program, which honors the best Web sites in the media world, including newspapers, TV/cable, radio and magazines.
Nearly 400 entries were submitted for this year’s competition, which were evaluated by nearly 50 judges.
