Drive nets more than 1,000 toys
Brendan Carey, vice president and general manager of TransChem Environmental; Bake Shaffer, owner of Martinizing Dry Cleaners; and Publisher Joe Mickelson of the Tucson Shopper helped local children have a merry Christmas through their first "Toys for Tucson" kids toy drive.
During December, volunteers from Trans-Chem, with the assistance of Roy Truman and Carey, placed gift-wrapped toy collection boxes at each of the 10 Martinizing Cleaners locations, and the Tucson Shopper donated space for advertisements for the toy collection.
Their combined efforts netted more than 1,000 toys, which were delivered Dec. 20 to the Salvation Army, then distributed to local charities on or before Christmas day.

DM-50 events raise nearly $70,000 for base
Two events, in addition to a DM-50-sponsored golf tournament held for Davis-Monthan airmen and their families, drew more than 12,000 people and raised nearly $70,000 for the DM-50 — a local group of businesspeople who use a variety of programs to ensure that all airmen and their families feel like a part of the Tucson community.
A portion of the money raised was donated to the base's Kachina Fund, which provides for unbudgeted special needs of the base.
The annual DM-50 picnic included free food and beverages, jumping castles from Tucson Carnival Supply, volleyball tournaments and balloon sculptures provided by Sabbar Shrine Clowns.
The second event, held during the UCLA-Arizona homecoming football game, consisted of more than 2,000 base personnel who enjoyed a tailgate party, game tickets and an A-10 flyover at the conclusion of the national anthem, which was performed by the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus.
During the halftime show, airmen were honored for their service in defending our country. They were Staff Sgt. Sean Hiles, 355th Medical Operations Squadron; Senior Airman Jon Soto, 55th Rescue Squadron; Tech. Sgt. Lisa Peele, 355th Mission Support Squadron; Master Sgt. Leo Chang, 755th Operations Support Squadron; and Tech. Sgt. Jason Moriset, 355th Maintenance Group.
Sponsors included Jim Click Automotive Group and Raytheon Missile Systems.
Among those who attended were Tom Murphy, Bob Logan, Glen Kerslake and Larry Finuf.
