I fell in love with nursing when I was a patient. Being in the hospital and cared for changed my life. I now knew that this is what I was meant to do with my life.
For the last 20+ years, I have worked bedside with patients, learning so much about myself and the art and science of healing. I learned how to listen, be supportive, and let go. I learned how to be a strong advocate for people. I learned how to be accountable for my mistakes and my humanity. I have taught many new nurses, skills I have developed over my career, and they have taught me how to be a good mentor and role model. I have had the extraordinary privilege of alleviating pain and suffering and supporting people at the end of their lives.

Illness takes class and race disparities and reduces them to a common denominator: people going through a crisis. Being able to care for vulnerable people has been rewarding, frustrating, painful, and joyous. Nursing allows me to express my love for people. I will continue working towards building community and collaboration in my organization that makes a difference, hopefully for years to come.
