Arizona-ASU Game 4: Late touchdown lifts UA past Sun Devils in 1915

Some important things to keep in mind: This isn’t the 100th anniversary; the upcoming meeting will be the 100th time the teams have gone head-to-head. There were a number of years that they didn’t compete against one another. The Wildcats lead the all-time series vs. the Sun Devils, 52-46-1.

What was reported at the time:

In spite of the fact that the Arizona varsity gained a total of over 325 yards of ground against Tempe Normal in the game yesterday afternoon on the university field, Arizona was unable to score until the last two minutes of play, when a touchdown made the only score of the game, the local team winning, 7 to 0.

Porter, the Arizona captain, outplayed any other man on either team. He carried the ball twice as far as any other man, and did some of the best tackling of the game. The Arizona forward passes worked poorly for the most part, but the long end runs around the right end worked well. Foster, the Tempe right end, stopped every run that came around his way. The Tempe team gained consistently by sending Adams through the Arizona left tackle and by making short forward passes, Mouer to Buck and Adams. Twice during the game, Tempe held Arizona for downs after they had advanced the ball to within twenty yards of the goal line, and Luis fumbled another time on the six-yard line.
