• Detroit catcher Gerald Laird was shaken up, but remained in the game Saturday when he was hit in the head by a broken bat. Laird was struck on the left side of his head by the barrel of a shattered bat swung by Cleveland's Chris Gimenez in the third inning. The helmet took part of the blow. While the ball dribbled out to second baseman Ryan Raburn, who threw out Gimenez, Laird rolled around in the dirt in pain. Tigers trainers rushed out to check on Laird, as did Gimenez and Tigers manager Jim Leyland. Laird sat on the ground for a moment, got to his feet and took a few practice throws - then put on his mask and continued to play.
• Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Saturday that All-Star pitcher Clay Buchholz, on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring, will start Wednesday in Oakland. Buchholz, who is 10-4 with a 2.45 ERA in 15 starts this season, was hurt running the bases in San Francisco on June 26.
