Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy sent an email to Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott after the Bills clinched the AFC East title with a victory in Denver on Saturday, McDermott told reporters in his postgame news conference.
“It’s so cool, so humbling. I really appreciate the relationship we have,” said McDermott, who became the first Bills coach since Levy to win an AFC East title and joined Levy and Lou Saban as the only coaches to take the Bills to the playoffs at least three times in four years.
In the email, Levy asked McDermott not to respond, knowing how busy he was, but McDermott responded anyway with a thank you and a promise that he knew the Bills' work was not done.
Many of Levy’s former players were celebrating the win with social media posts in the aftermath of the game. McDermott also thanked owners Terry and Kim Pegula, General Manager Brandon Beane, the coaches and staff, players and others around the building, with a nod to the past as well.

“We didn’t do this alone,” McDermott said. “There’s people around me and people who have come before us. Some no longer work for the Bills. I’m not able to get to all of them, so I will use (the media) to reach out to them and thank them. ...
“Coach Levy, Jim Kelly, Thurman (Thomas), Steve Tasker, Cornelius Bennett, Bruce Smith, Darryl Talley. All those guys, man. They live and die with us… I also feel a responsibility – I think all of our players do, as well – a responsibility to do things the right way for those guys, as well, because they started this years ago.”
