Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older adults in this country where trauma statistics indicate that one dies from a fall every 20 minutes and several are treated in an emergency room every minute.
On Thursday, Jan. 4, the Arizona Senior Academy will hold a lecture focused on fall prevention for seniors. The speaker is Dr. Bellal Joseph, associate professor and vice chair for knowledge expansion in the UA College of Medicine’s Department of Surgery. The lecture, free and open to the public, begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Great Room of the ASA Building.
A national figure in trauma surgery since he joined the UA in 2009, Dr. Joseph will discuss interventions that can reduce falls among older adults including medication safety, home safety and physical activity.
At the UA he is associate director of the Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Fellowship Programs, director of the Southern Arizona Tele-Trauma Program, associate director of Telesurgery, and director of Outpatient Clinics for Trauma/Emergency Surgery.
