A new, family-owned day spa business has opened in locations left vacant by the Tucson-based Spa One chain, which closed suddenly this summer.
Tucson pediatrician Dr. George Hobeich, his wife Renee Hobeich and daughter and son-in-law Valerie and Nick Menke opened the first location of Spa NiVa Friday, at 6330 N. Campbell Ave.
They took over the spa equipment and leased space used by Spa One, which left some employees and customers angry and upset when it closed without an explanation.
Renee Hobeich said the family expects to open two more Spa NiVa locations by Nov. 25 — at 6380 E. Grant Road and in Sam Hughes Place at 446 N. Campbell Ave.
The new business has already hired 33 people, and about 60 percent of the new hires are former Spa One employees.
“I want to emphasize that we are not in any way affiliated with Spa One. We did not buy the business,” Renee Hobeich said.
