A new locally owned and operated shop for baby items has opened on Tucson’s east side.
Broadway Babies — located in the former Dee’s Shoes building at 5764 E. Broadway — is run by California transplant Valarie Gomes and her daughter, Ariel Nixon.
Gomes got into the retail business when her kids were babies in California. “I started the store so I could keep my babies with me,” she said. “It worked out to my advantage. So, we’re back.”
The family sold its resale shop in Sacramento — after 15 years in business — before moving to Tucson in 2006. Gomes wanted to give it a try here.
The store is primarily stocked with new items ranging from nursery sets to clothing and gifts.
It also buys, sells or trades gently used items.

Customers can bring items in for cash or store credit any time during store hours. Merchandise must be in “very good condition,” with no stains or tears, Gomes said.
