Béla Bartók scored his Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion for four musicians - a pair each of pianists and percussionists.
Sounds simple enough until you see the work performed. In all, the musicians multitask among seven instruments, including the pianos, snare drum, tam-tam and xylophone.
Leos Janácek's "Concertina" employs a piano, pair of violins, a viola, clarinet, horn and bassoon.
The two composers' works are scored just creatively enough to make pianist Michael Dauphinais's program for Monday's "An Evening of Creatively-Scored Chamber Music."
Dauphinais, an adjunct instructor at the University of Arizona and doctoral student at Arizona State University, is teaming up with some Tucson musician colleagues for the concert: pianist John Milbauer, percussionists Norman Weinberg and Kimberly Toscano, Daniel Katzen on horn, Jerry Kirkbride on clarinet, Jessica Campbell on bassoon, violinists Mark Rush and Ben Nisbet, and violist Yvonne Creanga.
