Dove of Peace Lutheran Church used to hold its annual free jazz concert in July, but the weather proved unpredictable. Too often they were met with rain.
Then they moved it to June, but it was too dang hot.
This year, they have moved the annual event up to this weekend, hoping to capitalize on good weather and the winter visitor holdouts, folks who are sticking around a bit longer.
The 2018 Jazz Under the Stars will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the church, 665 W. Roller Coaster Road, with Tucson’s NoethenButJazz Quartet. Expect the foursome — frontman Mark Noethen on piano and vocals, Cass Preston blowing trumpet and vocals, Lanny Webb on bass and Gil Rodriguez on drums — to mix things up. They dabble in Latin, New Orleans and Brazilian jazz and mix in some blues and holiday jazz interpretations into a setlist that lovingly recalls trad jazz and the standards.
