Giada De Laurentiis went home on “Dancing with the Stars” Tuesday night. But she’s not the show’s story.
Ezra Frech, the Paralympian who wowed the audience last week, went one better with a cha cha that prompted the judges to say, “What the Frech?”
Unwilling to rely on goodwill, he attacked the dance and showed everyone how possible this competition is. He tied for the night’s leading score and proved it doesn’t pay to whine during rehearsals or look out of place in the ballroom.

While Guillermo Rodriguez got the same score as Giada (a 12), he had a great attitude and had two dancers help him pull off a key move. He was charming, which could keep him in the game for quite some time.
Between contestants, there were a ton of ads for drugs. We’re not sure if they’re commenting on the performances or giving the dancers an out.

Another help: fog. Several used it to cover up poor footwork.
And Tyler Cameron ripped off his shirt in order to get votes. Judges asked if he was playing the “sexy card” a little too soon in the competition. Frankly, he needs it. His salsa was riddled with lifts and “muscle power.”
While Jenna Dewan was at the top last week, she pulled a “Big Brother” and “flew under the radar” during “Viral Hits” week. She’s still a professional and, like Harry Shum Jr., will be in the finals. But she’s trying to act like she’s in the same pot as the others.

The one who doesn’t play that game is Amber Glenn, the Olympian who always goes for the gold. She got a 21, the night’s top score, and was told she had the best tango of the night. She did.
Tatyana Ali relied on smoke (and a bad dress) to get sympathy, but it wasn’t necessary. She danced well (a foxtrot) and had enough style to get an 18 and a chance for more.
As much as Rodriguez might be the lowest on the judge’s board, he has plenty of personality that is obviously playing well with the viewers. The ones who hang in his midst are those who haven’t made a big move. Connor Wood, Jackson Olson, Ciara Miller, Taylor Hanson, Cameron and Julia Stiles fall in this pot.
Meanwhile, the ones at the top: Frech, Glenn, Dewan and Shum. Maura Higgins should be in that pool, too, but she doesn’t have the social media clout others do. She’ll be in for quite a while, but she has vulnerabilities.
Watch Frech, though. He’s moving people in ways we never realized. He’s amazing on the floor and able to adapt to anything thrown at him. This could be the year of inspiration. Others talk about it, but he demonstrates it.
