Senators Steve Sweeney and Christoper Connors retained their state Senate seats on Tuesday after cruising to victory in what will go down as the most expensive election day in the history of New Jersey.
Sweeney, a Democrat, recaptured his senate seat over Fran Grenier despite the New Jersey Education Association spending millions of dollars in attack ads against him.
The association, which is the largest teachers union in the state, turned against Sweeney after he broke a promise to lobby for full funding of the pensions owed to the teachers.
Special interest groups, however, matched the spending for Sweeney.
Overall, the Sweeney race is projected to top $16 million.
Connors, meanwhile, retained his seat after defeating Brian White.
