LaSalle Park officially has a new name to go with its upcoming transformation.
It is now Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park in honor of the Buffalo Bills founder and owner for more than 50 years and his dedication to Western New York.
The Buffalo Common Council and Mayor Byron W. Brown officially renamed the park Tuesday as Mary Wilson, wife of the late Bills owner, looked on.
"Ralph would absolutely loved to have been here today for this," she said in Council chambers, before a signing ceremony in the mayor's office.
Last year, the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation announced a $50 million commitment to the park, which will have improved waterfront access, better ballfields, bike paths, an athletic loop and an enhanced dog run, in addition to a lagoon. The foundation pledged another $50 million to develop a comprehensive regional trail system. The $100 million investment is the largest philanthropic gift in Western New York history.
