A politician's rise
Colosio was a popular Mexican politician who came from an old family in Magdalena de Kino, Sonora. Through scholarships and loans, Colosio studied economics at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and attended English classes at the University of Arizona. He was elected in 1985 to the Mexican Congress and later became a senator.
In 1992, Colosio became social development secretary under President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, who handpicked him to run for president in 1994. Colosio had the ability to motivate people and drew larger crowds than any other politician no matter where he went, said Francisco Javier Taddei, who helped in Colosio's presidential campaign.
Colosio was killed while campaigning in Tijuana in 1994. His assassination 10 years ago today was the first political assassination in Mexico in nearly 70 years.
