Greenlee County sheriff's deputies were searching Monday for a man authorities described as a white supremacist gang member who escaped Sunday night from the county jail in Clifton, officials said.
Clifford Bea Fowler, 28, was awaiting trial in Greenlee County Superior Court on charges of homicide and extreme DUI in a fatal hit-and-run, said Sheriff Steve Tucker.
Greenlee is northeast of Safford, near the Arizona-New Mexico border.
Sheriff's deputies had not found Fowler by Monday afternoon but did have leads that may result in his capture, Tucker said.
Fowler is considered to be armed and dangerous and has the words "skin head" tattooed on the front of his neck, he said.
Fowler was last seen about 11:30 p.m.. Sunday and was identified as missing at 12:20 a.m. Monday, Tucker said.
