A Pinal County jail inmate assaulted a detention officer this month in an apparent attempt to stay locked up, authorities said.
Alexandro Guerrero, 26, was about to be released April 17 when he punched and kicked a detention officer, said Tim Gaffney, a Pinal County spokesman.
A videotape shows the attack as well as the jail staff's response. Co-workers helped the officer get up and restrained Guerrero with handcuffs, Gaffney said.
Guerrero attacked the officer because he feared he would be killed by members of a Mexican drug cartel if he were set free, Gaffney said. The cartel had put out a hit on Guerrero, he said.
Guerrero, of Yuma, was booked back into the Pinal County jail on three counts of aggravated assault on a detention officer, and is being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond, Gaffney said.
