Sixteen candidates are running for school district governing-board seats this November in Pima County's rural areas, along with the Pima County Joint Technical Education District.
The candidates, who are running for 16 open seats, all submitted paperwork and petitions to the Office of the Pima County Superintendent by Wednesday - the deadline to file.
For the most part, the races are uncontested with the number of candidates being equivalent to the number of open seats.
That is not the case, however, in the Pima County JTED, where four candidates are seeking three seats.
The JTED is a public high school district that provides free career and technical education to all sophomore-, junior- and senior-level students in Pima County for credit, giving them a head start on college and careers.

It serves students from public, private and charter schools, students who are home-schooled as well as students who have or are in the process of earning a GED.
On the other end, the Continental Elementary School District has more open seats - three - than it does candidates - two. In such instances, the county schools superintendent may submit a request to cancel that district's election to save the district money.
The superintendent would let the district know of the recommendation before submitting the request.
Because there would be vacancies, the superintendent would then make appointments to the board through the formal appointment process.
