A South Side arts and culture facility will host two events promoting American Indian beading and jewelry making.
American Indian craft artist Vivian Enos will host a series of beading workshops, beginning with a dreamcatcher earring and pendants class on May 5 at the Hope VI Art and Culture Partnership facility, 949 E. 35th Street.
The facility will host an Arts and Craft Market featuring Indian beaded jewelry from Enos and other local crafts artists May 6. The money raised from the event will benefit the South Park Crafters, a group of residents that sponsors arts and crafts projects in the South Park neighborhood, Enos said.
Enos taught beading classes for the South Park Beading Circle, a workshop sponsored by the crafters, when Hope VI coordinator Xõchitl Gil-Higuchi approached her at a meeting and asked Enos to teach a class at the facility. "Once I heard she was doing workshops there, I thought it would be great to open it up to the whole neighborhood," Gil-Higuchi said.

The three-hour workshops are free and open to the public, but registration is required. All beading tools and materials will be supplied, Enos said.
The money from the arts and crafts market will pay for a future workshop sponsored by the crafters that will teach participants how to make jewelry from gourds, which are inedible fruits that harden when dried out, she said. The first class will begin May 19.
When Enos started beading about 15 years ago, she said she did not want to share her craft with the public. Now, however, she is eager to share the art form and its benefits.
"Beading is very therapeutic. It helps you relax," she said.
Enos will host two more beading workshops, including a class that teaches people how to make pipe bone chokers May 26 and another on how to make mini-baskets June 9.
