An assistant principal at Rincon High School was knocked unconscious after a fight broke out among eight freshman girls in the Midtown school’s cafeteria Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The administrator, Kim Babeu, was trying to break up the scuffle between the students when she was struck, said Karen Bynum, a Tucson Unified School District spokesman.
Authorities were still trying to find out what prompted the fight at Rincon High School, 421 N. Arcadia Blvd., near East Broadway and North Swan Road, Bynum said.
Babeu was taken to a hospital for observation and was expected to be released later in the day, Bynum said. None of the students were seriously injured.
The eight girls involved in the fight were detained by police and will be charged with disorderly conduct, said Sgt. Fabian Pacheco, a Tucson Police Department spokesman. They had been taken to the Police Department’s Midtown Substation, 1100 S. Alvernon Way, for interviews, he said.

Just who struck the teacher is still under investigation, Pacheco said.
A school official called authorities at 10:47 a.m. and said a large fight had broke at the cafeteria, he said.
The school was put on lockdown until shortly after noon as police and school safety officials secured the area, Pacheco said.
The district planned to send a letter home on Wednesday or Thursday informing parents of the situation, Bynum said. The students will be disciplined according to district policy, but those involved in the fight would likely be suspended, she said.
