Ariz. orthopedic surgeon's license suspended

SCOTTSDALE — The Arizona Medical Board has summarily suspended the license of Dr. David L. Greene, saying he represents an imminent threat to public health and safety.

Greene has had an orthopedic spinal surgery practice in Sun City West.

The medical board said that after a formal interview with Greene during its regularly scheduled meeting on Aug. 9, it ordered a Decree of Censure for multiple mishandled surgical complications and poor clinical judgment. The board also placed Greene on probation for two years.

Greene had testified to the board that over the last year and a-half he had not had any major, long-lasting surgical technical complications.

The medical board said that shortly after the Aug. 9 meeting, board staff members were notified of two recent cases involving patients of Greene.

The board said one patient developed a postoperative infection and required a second surgery. The second died in the recovery room on May 15.

The board said Greene failed to make them aware of these two cases.

Summary suspension of Greene's license means he will have an expedited hearing at the Office of Administrative Hearings. An administrative law judge will hold an evidentiary hearing and make a recommended order to the Arizona Medical Board.
