Historic and archive photos

Archival photos owned by the Arizona Daily Star and Tucson Citizen are temporarily not available for purchase from the public.

Photos for commercial and non-profit use

Published photos may be available for use in other publications, with restrictions. Daily Star photos will not be sold to supermarket “tabloids.” Photos cannot be used in connection with any political campaign.

Photographs featuring any recognizable people will not be sold for commercial or non-profit use unless the purchasing party can provide signed releases from all recognizable people. Contact Rick Wiley at rwiley@tucson.com for more information.

Licensing fees are determined by the intended usage. All licensing is handled at the corporate level at Lee Enterprises.

Use of photos

All photos taken by Arizona Daily Star employees and contractors are owned by the Arizona Daily Star. Photos may not be reprinted, republished or disseminated in any way without permission from the Arizona Daily Star. Photos owned by the Arizona Daily Star may not be used on social media without permission.

The Arizona Daily Star uses photos from several sources, including the Associated Press, local businesses, governmental organizations, readers and the subjects of stories. Those photos are owned by the respective parties. They may not be reprinted, republished or disseminated in any way without permission of the original rights holders.

Arizona Daily Star photos are often shared with other legitimate news organizations, such as the Associated Press or The Arizona Republic, only for news or sports reporting. 

Photos for publication

The Arizona Daily Star does not get model releases from subjects of photography. All photographs are intended solely for use in Arizona Daily Star publications in print and online. News photographs containing disturbing or graphic scenes are never sold or released to other parties.

General photographs owned by the Arizona Daily Star that show recognizable people will not be resold for commercial, advertising or marketing uses without written permission of the recognizable people in the photographs. 

In most cases, photographs of college and professional sports cannot be sold or disseminated under restrictions set forth by the agencies issuing credentials to cover the teams. Team symbols and logos within photos may be copyrighted by the teams. Any use of photos containing the copyrighted material that falls outside of normal news or sports reporting may result in legal penalties.
