NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Mike Heimerdinger, a veteran NFL assistant who coached last season after being diagnosed with cancer, died Friday. He was 58.
The Tennessee Titans confirmed Heimerdinger's death after talking with his family. He died while in Mexico to receive experimental treatments for a rare form of cancer.
He was offensive coordinator for the Titans when he was diagnosed with cancer in November 2010. He maintained his duties for the rest of the season but was fired in February, one day after Mike Munchak succeeded Jeff Fisher as Titans' coach.
• In Bangor, Mich., Peter Gent, a former wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys whose book about the seamier side of football was made into the movie, "North Dallas Forty," died Friday. He was 69. Gent was a star basketball player at Michigan State in the 1960s. He didn't play college football but got an tryout with the Cowboys in 1964 and played five seasons with the team.

Wildcat golfers tie for fourth in Albuquerque tournament
Erik Oja's 54-hole total of 216 led the Arizona Wildcats to a fourth-place tie Saturday in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate golf tournament.
Oja's even-par total was part of a team score of 885, 21 over par. UNLV topped the 16-team field in Albuquerque at 867, followed by New Mexico and San Diego State. North Texas and the Wildcats shared fourth.

Smith just misses out on shutout as Coyotes win preseason finale
GLENDALE - Mike Smith made 28 saves in the Phoenix Coyotes' 3-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night, the preseason finale for both teams.
Smith was perfect through two periods, and only a fluke goal prevented the shutout. Martin Hazel had a goal and an assist, and Radim Vrbata added two assists for the Coyotes (3-4).
The Sharks (5-1) spoiled Smith's shutout bid midway just over eight minutes into the final period when defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic's shot from the right point deflected off the Phoenix defense and over Smith's right shoulder.

US women win again in Europe on basketball training tour
MONTE DI PROCIDA, Italy - Swin Cash scored 17 points and Renee Montgomery added 16 to help the United States to a 78-68 victory over Ros Casares Valencia on Saturday night.
Cash earned MVP honors for the tournament which the Americans (2-0) won. Tina Charles had 15 points for the U.S., which is on a 12-day training tour of Europe.
• In Tokyo, ninth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland overpowered Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-2 to win the Pan Pacific Open for her second title of the year.
