Hannah Bjorgum and Sarah Butler combined to score 24 points as No. 9 Desert Christian cruised past No. 24 Chandler Prep 40-18 in the opening round of the girls Division IV state tournament on Friday.
Taylor Usry finished with nine points and 14 rebounds as the Eagles (17-4) will play No. 8 Round Valley (14-6) at the Prescott Valley Event Center on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Already up 19-9 at halftime, Desert Christian added a 13-4 third quarter to take a 32-13 lead into the fourth.
The Eagles, who have won four of their last five games, lost in the second round a year ago.
No. 13 Pusch Ridge Christian 50, No. 20 Phoenix Bourgade Catholic 15
Bree Olson’s 13 points and another 12 from Rachel Hess paved the way, as No. 13 Pusch Ridge Christian clobbered No. 20 Phoenix Bourgade Catholic 50-15.

The Lions, which held the Golden Eagles scoreless in the first quarter, will play No. 4 Phoenix Arizona Lutheran (16-4) at Bradshaw Mountain High School on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Pusch Ridge (17-4) lost to the Coyotes 34-23 in tournament play back in December.
The Lions reached the Division III quarterfinals a year ago.
No. 15 Phoenix Country Day 32, No. 18 Tanque Verde 26
Leading by two after three quarter, No. 18 Tanque Verde lost a tough one to No. 15 Phoenix Country Day 32-26. Hailey Goley topped the scoring column for Tanque Verde with eight points and Anisa Hermosillo had six.
“Our execution wasn’t what it should have been,” said coach Michael Edwards. “We had tons of film on them. We knew what wanted to do. We just didn’t execute in the game like we did in practice the last four days. It was the small details.”
Boys Division IV state tournament, first round
No. 19 Globe 56, No. 14 Pusch Ridge Christian 50
Fifteen points from Aaron Noller and 11 from Cameron Foss proved to be too little as No. 14 Pusch Ridge Christian fell 56-50 against No. 19 Globe. The Lions were upset in large part to finding themselves on the wrong side of a 29-14 second half.
Girls Division V state tournament, first round
No. 16 The Gregory School 43, No. 17 Arizona College Prep 19
With the help of 22 points from Taylor Thompson and a 27-8 second half, No. 16 Gregory School cruised past No. 17 Chandler Arizona College Prep 43-19, moving on the second round of the girls Division V state tournament.
Chiara Gloesslein finished with 12 points for the Hawks, who play undefeated No. 1 Sanders Valley Sanders (20-0) at Prescott High School on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Pirates finished as the Division IV runner-up a year ago.
“Our defensive tenacity was persistent throughout game,” said Gregory School coach Michelle Berry. ‘We were able to hold them to very few good opportunities.”
Prior to the girls game Saturday, Berry will also coach Gregory's second-seeded boys team against No. 18 Superior. That game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the same location.
Boys Division V state tournament, first round
No. 13 St. Augustine Catholic 50, No. 20 Many Farms 45
Andrew Reyna scored a game-high 19 points to lead No. 13 St. Augustine Catholic over No. 20 Many Farms 50-45. Jacob Dybas finished with 11 as the Wolves secured their first-ever state tournament victory.
The Wolves (17-4) will play No. 4 Bisbee (17-3) at Prescott High School on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. St. Augustine beat the visiting Pumas 71-66 less than a month ago, on Jan. 22.
