Salpointe Catholic’s sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 is an impressive list of ex-Lancer golfers. Mike Hultquist, one of the top amateur players in Tucson history, went on to play for the Oklahoma Sooners in the late 1970s. Brent Lingel has become a PGA Master Professional, operating both the Rolling Hills and Dorado golf clubs of Tucson.
And Sara Brown Radley became a regular on the LPGA Tour in 2016, just the second woman from Tucson (with Sahuaro High’s Cindy Rarick) to earn LPGA Tour playing privileges. Radley, who is married to Oregon Ducks head women’s golf coach Derek Radley, was also a co-host on the Golf Channel’s “School of Golf’’ for three years. Salpointe’s Class of 2024 will be inducted Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. on campus.
Also inducted will be Jason Dickens, Class of ’99, easily one of the 10 best boys basketball players in Salpointe history. Dickens played college basketball at Davidson and LMU. ...

• Wait a second: The Arizona Diamondbacks fired pitching coach Brent Strom last week, blaming the D’backs' late-season meltdown on the 75-year-old coach who has lived in Tucson since the mid-1970s. It was only a year ago that Strom was hailed as the genius behind the D'backs' run to the World Series. Said Strom, one of the best in the business: “Our pitching is what held us back and heavy is the head that wears the crown and it’s me. I did everything I could and it just didn’t work out.” ...
• It has been 32 years since Jim Furyk helped lead Arizona to the NCAA men’s golf championship. Since then, he has won the 2003 U.S. Open and the 2010 FedEx Cup championship. He has been a member of nine USA Ryder Cup teams, and in 2018 was the USA Ryder Cup captain. Last week, Furyk, captain of the USA’s Presidents Cup team, won another championship. What’s more, he has won 17 PGA Tour Events and earned $71.5 million on tour, No. 6 in golf history. His résumé strongly suggests he should be the next golfer inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. An announcement for the Class of 2025 is expected next month.
From Greg Hansen's Notebook: The UA announced last week its Oct. 19 homecoming football game against Colorado is a sellout. As far as I could research, not even an ASU-Arizona Territorial Cup game has been sold out more than a few days before kickoff.
From Greg Hansen's Notebook: Arizona offensive coordinator Dino Babers’ decision to move aside and let 35-year-old Arizona assistant football coach Matt Adkins call plays for the Wildcats doesn’t come as much of a surprise. It is history repeating itself.
