For a lot of people — probably most — trail running involves getting off the asphalt. That usually means compacted dirt, crushed limestone or wood chips, surfaces that offer a softer alternative to the pavement, but are typically no problem for traditional running shoes to handle.
But then you have serious trail running, the kind you see in the ads for trail running shoes, with steep climbs, rocks, roots, and twisting trails. Here you'll definitely want some additional support and protection from obstacles on the ground.
Columbia's Montrail Rogue FKT II is that trail running shoe for rugged mountain trails.
The outsole, with its 6.5-millimeter lugs, can handle just about any terrain, and a thick, full-length FluidFoam midsole provides plenty of cushioning. While the bottom of the shoe screams tank, the upper is more like a sports car, with a 3-D-printed cage that eliminates seams and glues to form a lightweight and breathable shell around your foot.

The bright colors — orange and red for men, bright green and aqua for women — scream race car speed (the FKT sands for "fastest known time").
For serious trail runners, this is a shoe worth exploring, even if its name is a mouthful.
