What's more American than the melodic, triumphant marches of the march king himself, John Philip Sousa?
And let's toss in a world premiere of a heart-crossing, flag-waving piece written especially for the man who will be leading this merry band of music makers.
That's what's in store for the Tucson Pops Orchestra's annual Memorial Day Concert Sunday at Reid Park's DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center.
The concert starts at 7 p.m. The program includes the world premiere of Isaac's Patriotic Overture, written for the Pops longtime conductor László Veres, and a pair of Sousa marches - "Hands Across the Sea" and Fugue on "Yankee Doodle."
Admission is free, although donations will be accepted.
Across town on Saturday, Veres will lead his volunteer Arizona Symphonic Winds in a program that includes twin cellos and mime Rick Warner. The Winds concert starts at 7 p.m. at Udall Park, 7200 E. Tanque Verde Road. Admission is free.
