If you're thinking about getting the family out of the city for Memorial Day, head out to the 10th annual Alpaca Shearing Day and Fiber Festival in Elgin.
Kids and adults can shear the alpacas — smaller versions of their cousin, the llama — and learn how to spin and weave. There are also tours of the alpaca ranch and a prize drawing held hourly starting at 11 a.m. Proceeds benefit local charities.
Raw fiber, yarn, clothing, home decorations and a variety of other alpaca products will be for sale, and vendors will sell food and drinks.
To get to Heartland Ranch take Interstate 10 east, go south on Arizona 83, turn left on Lyle Canyon Road between Mileposts 12 and 13 and follow the signs to the ranch in Elgin.
Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday. Free. 1-520-455-5701.
