Every family deserves the opportunity to thrive, and through the power of collaboration, hundreds of families across Southern Arizona are receiving the support they need to build brighter futures.
Through funding from First Things First, United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona coordinates the Family Support Alliance, bringing together evidence-based home visiting programs that provide personalized support for parents and caregivers. Over the past year, these collective efforts have served 726 families across Tucson and Southern Arizona, connecting them with resources that promote healthy child development, strengthen parenting skills, improve family well-being and create lasting stability.
Behind every number is a unique story of resilience, hope and transformation. The three stories below offer a glimpse of the life-changing impact home visiting can have when families are supported with compassion, trusted relationships and a community working together to help them thrive.

A family's journey of resilience across generations
One family’s journey with the Parents as Teachers program is a powerful testament to the lasting impact of consistent support. The family first enrolled many years ago while raising six young children, with their youngest just one year old. Over time, they experienced unimaginable loss when the children’s mother died in a car accident, followed by the death of their grandmother due to health complications.
Despite these heartbreaking circumstances, the family did not face them alone. Their grandfather became the children’s legal guardian while navigating the challenges of living with both blindness and deafness. Throughout every transition, home visitors remained a trusted source of guidance, connecting the family to essential resources and surrounding them with encouragement, stability and a caring community determined to help them succeed.
Years of perseverance and support led to a milestone the community celebrated. This spring, the oldest granddaughter graduated from Amphitheater High School, fulfilling a dream that represented more than earning a diploma. Her achievement symbolizes resilience, hope and a brighter future not only for herself but for her younger siblings who continue to look to her as an example. Her story underscores that when families are supported through life’s greatest challenges, resilience can grow into opportunity for generations to come.
Small support creates big opportunities

For many parents, pursuing an education or building financial stability can feel out of reach while raising young children. Through the Nurse-Family Partnership program, families receive personalized support to overcome the barriers standing between them and their goals.
Working alongside their nurse home visitors, several parents developed plans to return to school by navigating challenges such as child care, transportation, work schedules and balancing family responsibilities. With encouragement and practical support, parents enrolled in career certification programs, while others earned their high school diplomas, creating new opportunities for themselves and their children.
That same commitment to removing barriers extended beyond education. One family facing housing instability was connected to community resources that helped them secure a safe apartment, find steady employment and access emergency assistance, including groceries and a replacement car seat through United Way. For other families experiencing food insecurity, emergency grocery support provided immediate relief during difficult times. One parent shared, “It’s such a blessing that you got us this food.” Another reflected, “My heart is so full. I prayed over our pantry this week and was praying for a miracle.”
These stories demonstrate that when families have access to the right support at the right time, immediate needs can become steppingstones toward lasting stability. By helping parents overcome obstacles today, home visiting programs are creating stronger futures for children and families across Southern Arizona.
Finding hope beyond the diagnosis
When one mother enrolled in the Healthy Families Program through Child & Family Resources, she was navigating the unimaginable. Living with a terminal illness that limited her physical abilities, she worried about how she would care for her young daughter and what the future might hold for them both.
With the support of her home visitor, she found more than parenting guidance. Together, they worked through practical ways to care for her daughter, connected with mental health resources and social support, and created a safe space to process the fear and uncertainty that made it difficult to think about the future. Over time, those conversations evolved from simply getting through each day to setting meaningful goals and embracing new possibilities.
As the family’s confidence grew, so did the bond between mother and daughter. Through empathetic parenting strategies, the mother discovered that preparing her daughter for the future did not mean encouraging independence before its time. Instead, she learned that love, emotional connection and a strong support network would give her daughter the foundation she needed to thrive. After five years, the family graduated from the program stronger, more connected and filled with renewed hope for the future.
