If you’re looking for a fun way to be active with the whole family, the Tucson J (Tucson Jewish Community Center) and Tucson Medical Center are hosting a family triathlon next Sunday, April 17.
The event, in its second year, is designed as a noncompetitive participatory triathlon to allow kids to experience multi-sport.
More than 100 families participated in last year’s triathlon, with ages ranging from 3 to 93.
“From kids to adults, everyone who crosses that finish line, or helps by encouraging someone else to cross, feels a sense of accomplishment — and what a powerful experience to share as a family,” said Debbie Claggett, vice president of Trisports.com .
There are three distances available for different age ranges.
Children ages 3 to 6, accompanied by a mentor, can choose the short distances: 25-yard swim, half-mile bike ride and quarter-mile run.

School-age children (5-12) can choose the mid-distance event: 50-yard swim, 3-mile bike ride and half-mile run.
Older children, teens or adults can choose the “Super Sprint” distance: 200-yard serpentine swim, 5-mile bike ride and 1-mile run.
There are no age group awards or timing, as the triathlon is a participatory event. All participants will receive a swim cap, event T-shirt and a dog tag medal of participation.
The run and swim parts of the race will be on the Tucson J campus and the bike ride will take place along the Rillito River bike path.
Registration costs $25 to $75. All proceeds benefit The Shyann Kindness Project, a nonprofit organization that serves underprivileged and medically fragile children in the Tucson area.
The deadline to register online is today, Sunday, April 10, but you can still register at packet pick-up at the Tucson J on April 16.
