A Catalina grade schooler who tried to get the community interested in helping replace the playground equipment at a park that was destroyed in an arson fire was honored Friday by Pima County.
Savannah Williams, 11, a sixth-grader at Coronado K-8 School, was irked at the delay in getting new equipment on the park's playground that had been set ablaze in July. It was the third time in four years that the playground had been set on fire.
"I thought it was really sad that someone would burn down the one thing in Catalina we had to do," Savannah said in a news release.
She started a petition drive, collecting signatures from classmates, teachers and others in hopes of getting a new place to play.
While the county was already planning to replace the equipment, Savannah's work earned her a certificate and the chance to choose the color of the park's replacement playground.

The new equipment should be in place before year's end, Rafael Payan, the department's director, said in a news release.
"I thought it was really sad that someone would burn down the one thing in Catalina we had to do."
